Radiology’s Role in Cross-Department Collaboration

From oncology to cardiology, Alzheimer’s disease to stroke, imaging faculty have an impact on nearly all the conditions that have research or clinical relevance to the UCSF campus. As the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging’s Vice Chair of Research, Sharmila Majumdar, PhD, has a comprehensive focus on the big picture and the department’s wide scope of research projects.

“With the way the department is set up, we have interactions and collaborations with most of the major organ and disease systems that are on campus,” explains Dr. Majumdar. It’s through those vitally interwoven relationships that the department helps make rapid advancements in precision medicine at UCSF.

As a part of Dr. Majumdar’s own research interests, she directs the Musculoskeletal Quantitative Imaging Research group, an interdisciplinary center for faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, research staff, and medical and graduate students to pursue teaching and research in quantitative tissue characterization focused on the musculoskeletal system.
