David Avrin, MD, PhD

Professor Emeritus
Prof of Clinical Radiology

Dr. David Avrin is a clinical member of the Body Interventional Radiology and Abdominal Imaging Sections. As past vice-chair of informatics, Dr. Avrin oversaw the integration of medical imaging and patient-care information systems that enables radiologists to deliver more relevant clinical care, as well as contribute significantly to the educational, and research missions. Before completing his medical degree, Dr. Avrin received a PhD in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. Dr. Avrin’s research is focused on creating the infrastructure and applications for seamless clinical system integration, and support for education and research. Dr. Avrin is a member of the Medical Center informatics team that seeks to improve quality of care, safety and efficiency through IT. To date, he has written fifty-five papers on these topics, and five book chapters on the clinical applications of digital medical imaging, and the investment and role of these various systems in the academic missions of education and research.

He is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Imaging in Medicine. He has served in several university and national leadership positions, most recently as the program director of the UCSF Clinical Informatics Fellowship, and the chairman of the RSNA Steering Committee for Digital Roadmap Content.
