How is ultrasound performed?

UCSF Ultrasound Radiologist Dr. Callen explains that using ultrasound pictures.

Sonographer also called technologist. They place the probes on the abdomen, and they will often place gel between the ultrasound transducer and the patients' skin. The gel has two purposes: it gets rid of friction as we glide the transducer on the skin and secondly we don’t want air to interfere with the contact that the ultrasound probe and the patient’s skin. As transducer glides over the skin, the probe send out signals and it is listening to see how long did it take to out and come back in and it puts a little dot away from the skin where it encounters that structure, which will paint a picture.
