MR images based on interactions with water (rather than on the dynamics of isolated nuclei) have unique properties, which can be leveraged either to probe subvoxel structure, to yield sharp lines in MRS, or to image temperature on an absolute scale.  Furthermore, innovative acceleration schemes can be used to cut down scan times for these more sophisticated techniques.  We will discuss biomedical applications of these methods and their potential to contribute to neuroimaging.
