Abstract:

The qualitative analysis of biological and medical images is a time-consuming process and is subject to inter- and intra-reader variations. In medicine, this affects the prediction of the clinical outcome in an undesirable way. We are developing image analysis systems, for computer-assisted interpretations of biological and medical images to assist biologists, radiologists and pathologists in their decision-making. Our goal is to provide computational tools, with which users can extract quantitative features useful for more objective and accurate image analysis, diagnosis and prognosis. Furthermore, we are investigating high-performance computational infrastructures to efficiently process these relatively large images. The developed systems provide promising results, both in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the techniques as well as examples from our ongoing projects.

Biography:

Dr. Metin Gurcan is a tenured Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the Ohio State University and the founding director of the Clinical Image Analysis Lab (www.bmi.osu.edu/cialab). Dr. Gurcan received his BSc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University, Turkey and his MSc. Degree in Digital Systems Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, England. From 1999 to 2001, he was a postdoctoral research fellow and later a research investigator in the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to joining the Ohio State University in 2005, he worked as a senior researcher and product director at a high-tech company, specializing in computer-aided detection and diagnosis of cancer from radiological images. He is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and was awarded two patents in computer-aided diagnosis in volumetric imagery. Dr. Gurcan is the recipient of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Organization Award; NIH Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration (EUREKA) Award; NCI caBIG Embodying the Vision Award; Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award; The OSU Cancer Center REAP Award, and is a senior of member of IEEE, SPIE and RSNA. Dr. Gurcan is the founding chair of the SPIE Digital Pathology Conference and Histopathological Image Analysis (HIMA) meeting series.
