Robert M. Barr, MD of Mecklenburg Radiology Associates

Robert Barr MD

Robert M. Barr, MD, FACR
President, Mecklenburg Associates

About this Lecture: Physician extenders are playing an increasing role in healthcare delivery and have become more widely accepted in private practice radiology over the past 10 years or more.  There remains some confusion regarding the various degree programs and the role that different practitioners would play in the radiology department.  We will discuss the role of physician extenders in radiology, with a focus on the role of physician assistants (PAs) in particular in the private practice setting. We will highlight the differences in training and credentialing of physician assistants, nurse practitioners (NPs), radiology assistants (RAs), and radiology practitioner assistants (RPAs), and discuss the impact of state and federal regulations on their practicality in radiology.  Potential efficiencies in the setting of healthcare reform will be considered, and an introduction into the Medicare regulatory and valuation processes will be helpful in understanding obstacles and risks.

Dr. Robert Barr is a neuroradiologist practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina since 1995, and is the President of Mecklenburg Radiology Associates, a group of 40 radiologists and 10 physician assistants. He is a graduate of Harvard University and the UCSF School of Medicine. Following internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, he returned to UCSF for radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship. In Charlotte, Dr. Barr serves on multiple hospital committees including the Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center Executive Steering Committee.  He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Novant Medical Group.

Dr. Barr has been a strong advocate for clinical neuroradiology and has been actively involved in issues regarding coding, reimbursement, and coverage policy through the ASNR Health Policy Committee (HPC), which he currently chairs. He previously served as the ASNR Advisor to the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), where he helped determine the value for a wide range of neuroradiology procedures. He is also a member of the Economics Commission of the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute.

He has lectured and published on topics in neuroradiology and health policy, and has served as a reviewer for theAmerican Journal of Neuroradiology.  He is married to Tara (Nakayama) Barr, UCSF Medical School class of 1991.  They have a son at UNC Chapel Hill and a daughter in high school.
