Title: “Microstructural alterations in brain disorders revealed by free-water imaging”

Abstract:
Diffusion MRI has been a powerful tool in the study of microstructural pathologies related to various brain disorders. We have recently proposed free-water imaging as an analysis method for diffusion MRI, which reduces partial volume effects of brain tissue and extracellular free-water. The volume of free-water is immerging as a new and clinically important marker, which may indicate neuroinflammation in early stages of brain disorders, and atrophy in latter stages. Diffusivities corrected for free-water appear to show better separation between patients and controls, and increase our ability to relate underlying pathologies with diffusion MRI changes. This talk will present the free-water methodology, and its applications to various brain disorders, including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and brain injuries.

Bio:
Ofer Pasternak, PhD, is an Instructor in Psychiatry, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.  He graduated from the Interdisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel-Aviv University, Israel, where he obtained his BSc and PhD in computer science. Dr. Pasternak joined Harvard Medical School on October 2009 as a Fulbright post-doctoral fellow working under the joint supervision of Dr. Martha Shenton at the Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory and Dr. Carl-Fredrik Westin at the Laboratory for Mathematics in Imaging. On 2012 he was awarded the NARSAD young investigator award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.
