Masters of Science in Biomedical Imaging: Academic Probation and Dismissal

Students that are not meeting the academic and/or professional standards of the university (as defined in the Policy on Student Progress section) may be subject to academic probation and dismissal.  The role of the academic probation program is to provide students with additional support to help them address deficiencies and improve their performance so that they meet the required academic standard.  Specific milestones during a period of academic probation will be identified in collaboration with the student.  Dismissal is considered if the student fails to demonstrate sufficient progress while on academic probation.  Details of the academic probation program and the dismissal process are provided below.

Academic Probation

A student will be placed on academic probation if they do not achieve at least a B grade in any core course or if their grade point average either cumulatively or in a specific quarter falls below 3.00 (B average).  Students will be notified of their probationary status by the Director of Graduate Studies and a meeting will be set up to establish a remediation plan.  The remediation plan will specify the reasons for the student’s probationary status and define the actions that the student must take to bring themselves into good academic standing.  Students will remain on academic probation until they have met the requirements of their remediation plan.  Dismissal shall be considered if the student fails to demonstrate acceptable progress in their remediation plan.

Dismissal

Dismissal is considered when students demonstrate significant unprofessional behavior or when they fail to meet the milestones specified in their academic probation remediation plan.  Unprofessional behavior includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, or harassment of any form.  A recommendation for dismissal will initially be made by the Director of Graduate Studies and conveyed to both the student and Program Director.  The student may then elect to voluntarily withdraw from the program or appeal their dismissal.  If they elect to appeal their dismissal, the Program Director will convene a three member panel that will be selected from MSBI faculty or members of the MSBI executive.  The Director of Graduate Studies will provide written justification for dismissal to this panel and the student will have the opportunity to provide their counter-argument either verbally or in written form.  This panel will then come to a final decision regarding the student’s status.  If the dismissal decision is upheld, the student may be dismissed outright or dismissed with stated provisions for returning.
