Transcranial Focused Ultrasound: Next Generation Image Guided Therapy

Dr. Bhavya R. Shah is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Neuroradiology Division. He holds a secondary appointment as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and is the Director of the transcranial-focused ultrasound lab. Dr. Shah holds a bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical engineering, and philosophy from Washington University in St. Louis. He earned his medical degree through the combined training program at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia and received his radiology residency training at Boston Medical Center in Boston. He then obtained advanced training through a two-year National Institutes of Health-funded T-32 fellowship program at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California, during which time he also completed a biomedical device innovation program. He subsequently completed a fellowship program in neuroradiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago.

Before joining the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017, Dr. Shah began his career as an attending neuroradiologist at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis. His primary research interests include transcranial-focused ultrasound (FUS) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and brain tumors, nerve stimulation to improve limb function after stroke, and biomedical device innovation. He has an active collaboration with the biomedical engineering department at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Shah holds five patents and three recently granted provisional patents for an array of medical devices. He is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Chimeric Advanced Medical Devices, based in Palo Alto, California.

At UT Southwestern, Dr. Shah serves on the Neuroradiology Fellowship Program Selection Committee, as well as the Neuroradiology Magnetic Resonance Quality Control Committee. Dr. Shah is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and the Society of Interventional Radiology, for which he serves as a judge for its Biodesign-Innovation Committee. He is also a member of the Publication Committee of the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology.
