Speakers

Ella Jones, PhD
Specialist, Breast Imaging Research Group
Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, UCSF
Ella Jones, PhD has over 12 years of research experience in the private sector pioneering the development of targeted molecules for cancer imaging. At UCSF, Dr. Jones has integrated cell biology, protein engineering and synthetic chemistry to develop new reporter systems for in vivo imaging of disease biomarkers. She has been funded by NIH/NCI and has successfully produced various probes for preclinical and clinical use in optical and nuclear imaging. Her major contributions include the development of COX sensitive probe for breast cancer premalignancy and the prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) targeting probe for prostate cancer. Her current focus is translational breast cancer research. Her research examines the evaluation of normal breast tissues quantified by MR imaging markers as potential independent breast cancer risk factors. Dr. Jones' vast experience in all modalities of imaging spans from the preclinical to the clinical space. In particular, her experience in PET and MR imaging well positions her to expand her research in the emerging field of hybrid PET/MRI for breast cancer characterization.
Benjamin Franc, MD, MS
Professor of Clinical Radiology, Nuclear Medicine Section
Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, UCSF

Benjamin Franc, MD, MS, came to UCSF as an assistant professor in residence in the Nuclear Medicine subspecialty in 2003 and remained until 2007, when he took a position as a physician at Radiological Associates of Sacramento Medical Group. He served as Chairman of Nuclear Medicine from 2009-2014 and concomitantly served in multiple leadership positions in professional societies and health policy entities. Dr. Franc returned to UCSF’s Nuclear Medicine section as a Professor of Clinical Radiology in December 2014.

Dr. Franc's research at UCSF has focused on the development of new molecular imaging techniques including novel small molecule exploration and development. He has also developed programs for the early adoption and implementation of nuclear-based imaging and therapeutic technologies. His work also explores the implications of molecular imaging in healthcare, including a focus on outcomes-based research and setting up comparative effectiveness research in nuclear molecular imaging and therapy.

Kimberly Ray, MD
Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology
Associate Chief in the Breast Imaging Section
Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, UCSF

Kimberly Ray, MD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology and Associate Chief in the Breast Imaging section in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ray received her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine in 2001, and she completed a one-year internship from Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, in 2002. She finished a four-year Diagnostic Radiology residency from the University of California, Irvine in 2006, followed by a fellowship in Breast Imaging from UCSF in 2007.

From 2007-2013, Dr. Ray was the Medical Director of the Center for Breast Imaging and Diagnosis at the St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California. She has expertise in screening and diagnostic mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound and MRI, and breast interventional procedures. Her research interests focuses on the use of advanced breast imaging techniques such as digital breast tomosynthesis and MRI to improve clinical outcomes. In May 2014, Dr. Ray was appointed Associate Chief of Breast Imaging, shaping the new integrated breast imaging services at SFGH-Avon and Mount Zion sites. Dr. Ray serves as the MQSA lead interpreting physician for the Avon Breast Center and is focusing her efforts on programmatic enhancements at Avon including building IT infrastructure, establishing a digital breast tomosynthesis program and growing the breast MRI clinical and research programs.
