Medicare Survey: UCSF Medical Center Earns 4/5 Stars & Ranks Above California Average

In a recent survey of patients’ experiences by Medicare, UCSF Medical Center earned four out of a possible five stars and scored above the average for California hospitals in every category! At UCSF, patients are our primary concern and we do everything we can to ensure the patient experience is a positive one.

In addition to scoring above the California hospital average in all eleven topics surveyed, Medicare reported UCSF Medical Center’s results were equal to or greater than the national average in seven areas – including patient communication with both doctors and nurses, understanding of care and recovery, and likelihood of recommending the hospital. Further, 78 percent of patients surveyed gave UCSF Medical Center a 9 or 10 on a scale of 0 to 10, compared to the California and U.S. averages of 68 percent and 71 percent, respectively. Categories in which UCSF Medical Center performed above the California hospital average included response rate, pain control, bathroom cleanliness and noise levels.

We’re proud to share that UCSF earned a five out of five star rating for the measure related to hospital recommendations -- 83 percent of the 300 or more patients surveyed would recommend UCSF Medical Center to family and friends. This figure is 13 and 12 percent higher than the state and country average, respectively.

Medicare also collected data on the use of medical imaging. For most of the categories, a lower percentage is considered better, as higher numbers are likely to mean unnecessary scans or double scans. UCSF Medical Center scored lower – and thus better – than both the California average and the National average in five out of six of the categories surveyed.

As excellent quality of care and service is a central focus, we welcome all feedback from patients in order to continue to deliver the best experiences. We consider open communication between patients and their radiologists, nurses, administrators and other healthcare professionals to be an important way to understand patient needs and deliver the best quality care!

At UCSF, patient feedback is important. In addition to surveys, we’d love to hear about your experience at UCSF Medical Center.   Contact us here and connect with us on Facebook and Twitter!
