In 2007 the Department's research infrastructure was reorganized in an effort to encourage excellence in research and to create a climate for maximum integration of MD and PhD faculty researchers. This led to the formation of Research Interest Groups (RIGs) and Specialized Resource Groups (SRGs). RIGs and SRGs are of a similar structure to the clinical secions of the Department in their effort to group faculty investigators by their area of research. All faculty researchers in the Department are assigned to at least one RIG or SRG, but are encouraged to participate in multiple groups as appropriate.

Each RIG and SRG is led by a PhD and an MD faculty researcher (when applicable). The leaders of each RIG and SRG make up the Executive Research Council, led by the Vice-Chair for Research, Sharmila Majumdar, PhD. This council was established to provide oversight of the new research structure.

There are currently eight disease/organ based RIGs and five SRGs. They are listed below. Also listed below are the research labs associated with each RIG and SRG.
