Galateia Kazakia, PhD

Assistant Professor
Assist. Professor in Residence

Galateia J. Kazakia, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Residence and Director of Bone Quality Research Laboratory in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Kazakia received her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1995. She completed her MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2001, followed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Berkeley in 2004. Dr. Kazakia was awarded an NIH postdoctoral fellowship to develop bone imaging techniques, performing this work in the Musculoskeletal Quantitative Imaging Research group at UCSF. Dr. Kazakia joined the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging as an Assistant Professor in Residence in 2009.

Dr. Kazakia’s research is focused on the development of quantitative bone quality characterization techniques. This includes ex vivo tools such as micro computed tomography (microCT), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) imaging, in vivo systems such as high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT), and the evaluation of their clinical utility in the study of aging and musculoskeletal diseases. Dr. Kazakia’s major areas of research include: 1) tissue-level mineral characterization, which provides critical information in understanding mineralization processes and bone biomechanics in health and diseases, and 2) HR-pQCT assessment of structure parameters, which evaluates the accuracy, reproducibility, and clinical significance of high-resolution CT technology to in vivo imaging.

Dr. Kazakia is an active member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Orthopaedic Research Society. Dr. Kazakia serves as a reviewer for 10 scientific journals, and she has 26 published articles. She has written 27 peer-reviewed articles and 50 abstracts.
