Zachary Davis had been dealing with neck and shoulder pain on and off for several years, managing it with over-the-counter medications as needed. But one day in February, a roller coaster ride at an amusement park near his home in Los Angeles sent him reeling. 

Imaging tests at a nearby emergency hospital revealed a mass on his neck, and he was transferred to a local medical center for treatment.
