Susan Wall, MD, Teaches 25th Speaker Training Course!
Susan Wall, MD, completed her 25th and final Speaker Training Course on Monday, July 8. Dr. Wall launched this professional development series in 2009 with four junior faculty. A notable participant in the first cohort was our current Chair Christopher Hess, MD, PhD, an assistant professor at the time.
“In academic medicine, giving lectures is part of the job. We take joy in giving talks and we want you to get there too,” Dr. Wall often said to junior faculty members enrolled in the 4-session course.
As a unique departmental offering – there are no other courses like this at UCSF – Dr. Wall and her longtime co-instructor Elissa Price, MD, combine pre-work, recorded practice talks, coaching, and peer feedback to help radiologists become great public speakers. From a classroom lecture to an onstage talk at a conference or CME course, Dr. Wall notes that course participants form presentation habits that engage their audiences with a clear message, use well-curated supporting illustrations and figures, and skillfully handle Q&A.
“Oh, it's stunning to see the improvement,” said Dr. Wall. “It’s remarkable and amazing, and I’m proud that the course has thrived. I know that Dr. Elissa Price will do an outstanding job leading future Speaker Training Courses.”
Since 2007, Dr. Wall has worked on 2 years of course development, co-instructed 100 course meetings over 15 years, and engaged with 97 participants, all with exponential impact!
Thank you, Dr. Wall, for sharing your wisdom and expertise with our faculty, and congratulations on a job well done!
A unique professional development offering for Radiology faculty, the Speaker Training course will continue, under the leadership of Dr. Price. Faculty members Alyssa Kirsch, Yoo Jin Lee, and Kang Wang participated in the most recent course that concluded on Monday.
