UCSF's Katie Kinson Brings Comfort and Clarity to Breast Imaging
Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that early detection saves lives, but behind every clear image and diagnosis is a skilled professional ensuring that care feels personal. Katie Kinson, a Breast Imaging Sonographer at UCSF Imaging, plays a vital role in helping patients move from uncertainty to understanding with both precision and compassion.

Katie's work begins where a mammogram leaves off. "The mammogram gives us a landscape view of the breast that allows us to detect even the most subtle changes over time," she explains. "The ultrasound is our close-up picture that helps us understand what those changes actually are."
Her expertise allows radiologists to distinguish between fluid-filled cysts, solid masses, and normal breast tissue. For patients, that deeper look can be the difference between lingering anxiety and much-needed clarity. "An ultrasound doesn't mean something is wrong," she emphasizes. "It just means we're taking every step to make sure you get the most accurate information about your health."
What makes Katie's role so important is her ability to balance advanced technology with genuine empathy. "It's such a vulnerable time," she says. "Patients are often scared or uncertain, but when they show up for themselves, even when it's hard, that inspires me to show up for them."
Her calm presence and clear communication transform what could be a frightening experience into one rooted in trust.
When asked what she would say to someone nervous about scheduling a screening, Katie encourages courage through knowledge. "Mammograms are fast, safe, and effective," she says. "Early detection truly saves lives. We're here to answer every question and support you through the process."
Katie knows that early detection and compassionate care go hand in hand. "Mammograms and ultrasounds are among our best tools for catching changes early, when treatment is most effective," she says. "Education and reassurance give patients back a sense of control."
This October, and every month, professionals like Katie remind us that breast cancer awareness is not just about screening, it's about compassion, trust, and the people who make care feel human.
