German Healthcare Delegation Visits UCSF Radiology

Sharmila Majumdar, PhD, hosted Judith Gerlach, MdL, Bavarian State Minister of Health, Care and Prevention for a tour of Mission Bay on August 29, 2025. Gerlach’s delegation visited UCSF as one stop on a tour across the United States, seeking leaders in digitalization and innovations in the healthcare sector, start-ups, longevity, and prevention.
The delegation met with Andreas Rauschecker, MD, PhD, Peder Larson, PhD, and Alexandra Gersing, MD, PhD. The department’s representatives were joined by Catherine R. Lucey, MD, MACP, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Nicquet Blake, PhD, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, and Aenor Sawyer, MD, Executive Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship for UCSF Innovation Ventures.
Gerlach and her delegation heard UCSF’s unique history and vital place in medical research. The discussion then turned to how the department and UCSF as a whole have managed unique international collaborations in imaging and AI. Rauschecker discussed how federated AI training allows researchers to secure results even in the face of incompatible medical data laws. Attendees concluded the meeting ended with a vision for this visit to be the foundation for future scientific collaboration between leading institutions in California and Bavaria.
