Low-Field Cardiovascular MRI: Bridging Gaps in Healthcare Accessibility
After earning his B.S. (’83) and M.S. (’85) degrees at The Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University (’92), Orlando “Lon” Simonetti went to work for Siemens Medical Solutions where he served as Director of Cardiovascular MR Research and Development. He joined the Ohio State faculty in 2005, where Dr. Simonetti is the John W. Wolfe Professor in Cardiovascular Research, Professor of Radiology and Internal Medicine, and Vice Chair of Research in the Radiology Department.
Throughout his career spanning over 30 years, Lon has focused on the development of CMR pulse sequences and technology to expand the applications of CMR, as well as to enable faster and more reliable imaging. He has played a role in the development of a number of CMR techniques including black-blood turbo spin echo, late gadolinium enhancement, steady-state free precession cine, self-gating, T2 mapping, exercise CMR, and most recently low-field CMR.
Dr. Simonetti has played an active role in the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), having served as President and as the Society’s first CEO. In 2019, Lon was awarded the SCMR Gold Medal for distinguished and extraordinary service to the field of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
