Professor of Radiology
Interim Director, Clinical Informatics
Division of Pediatric Radiology
Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Richard Barth is the Radiologist-in-Chief emeritus at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford University, and Professor of Radiology at Stanford University.  Dr. Barth's radiology residency training was completed at UCSF followed by a fellowship in pediatric radiology at Boston Children’s Hospital.

His research interests have predominantly involved pediatric and fetal ultrasound applications in children and fetal MRI. Ultrasound research has focused on imaging alternatives to CT and MRI aimed at improving access and reducing radiation exposure and anesthesia. He initiated clinical and research pediatric ultrasound contrast programs at Lucile Packard in 2016. In 2018, he initiated a research collaboration between Stanford University and Fudan University, the largest children’s hospital in China, to investigate ultrasound elastography as a biomarker for pediatric liver fibrosis. He also started the fetal MRI program at Lucile Packard and currently serves as Medical Director.

Dr. Barth has served in leadership positions in several societies including President and Chair of the Board for the Society for Pediatric Radiology and President of SCORCH (Society for Chairs of Radiology Departments at Children’s Hospitals. He is currently the Chair of the American College of Radiology Pediatric Commission and a member of the ACR Board of Chancellors. He also serves on the Board of the Society for Pediatric Radiology and is a recipient of the SPR Gold Medal and Presidential Recognition Awards.  As Radiologist-in-Chief, Dr. Barth has recruited over 20 pediatric radiology faculty including pediatric radiologists, physician scientists, and basic scientists, who have advanced the care of children thru their clinical and research efforts.
