Mammography is the GOLD STANDARD exam for the detection of breast cancer, but not the most sensitive, especially in women with dense breasts. Newer techniques include screening MRI and screening ultrasound which both are relatively non-specific with a greater risk of benign biopsy.

Optical imaging and other newer techniques will continue to push forward the boundaries in our understanding and chances of detection of breast cancer at an early stage
