Catherine Klifa, PhD

 CK

Dr. Klifa is an Assistant Professor in the UCSF department of Radiology.  She received her B.S. in Physics from the University of Rouen, France in 1983 and her PhD in Electrical Engineering from the National School of Telecommunications, Paris, France in 1991.  She also earned a MBA from the University of San Francisco in 2002.  Dr. Klifa has also served as the San Francisco Chapter Engineering in Medicine and Biology Program Chair since 2006.

Dr. Klifa has been with the Breast MRI group since 2000.  Her background is in medical image processing with a particular focus on 3D reconstruction of data using a limited number of projections.  After working on images obtained from several modalities, such as Xray, ultrasound and CT, she now focuses on breast MRI and a combination of MRI and optical spectroscopy.  One of her goals is to develop new quantitative tools that can help assess breast cancer risks for populations of women who do not benefit from mammography (i.e. -  younger women, women with high breast density).

Dr. Klifa's main research interests include: breast MRI, diffuse optical spectroscopy (DOS) for breast cancer, new measures of breast density, new markers of breast cancer risk, high risk populations, digital image processing, segmentation, extraction of regions to quantify treatment effect on breast tissue composition changes, and radiation effects on breast tissue.
