Chiyo Uchida, RN, Named Inaugural Radiology Nurse of the Month

Chiyo Uchida, RN has been selected from the entire Radiology nursing staff at all UC San Francisco sites as the inaugural awardee of the new “UCSF Radiology Nurse of the Month” recognition program. The program was established to highlight the outstanding work of UCSF Radiology nurses. Nurse Uchida works at the Parnassus Heights site and specializes in providing support for surveillance bronchoscopies on lung transplant patients.

The faculty and healthcare staff nominators who selected Uchida noted her “gift for easing the anxiety and suffering of patients” and her “endless dedication to the teamwork required to care for the vast array of patients coming for procedures in the UCSF Radiology Department.”

“I am very honored to be recognized for my work in the Department of Radiology,” said Uchida. "The majority of my work is interacting with and assisting lung transplant patients with their surveillance bronchoscopies. It does not feel like "work" as I thoroughly enjoy what I do. I rely on my co-workers for their support and positive energy. It's wonderful being part of a team providing the best quality care for our patients."

Uchida received her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. She noted that she has been "proud to be a part of the UCSF family since 2007."

“Nurses are a driving force in the field of radiology and deserve to be highlighted for their important roles in patient care and in physician and radiologic technologist support,” said Karen Breen, RN, MSN, an administrative nurse and manager in the department. “It is exciting and rewarding to be working with so many bright, talented nurses. As leaders of the UCSF Nursing staff, Charlene Fong, RN and I are focused on ensuring that the incredible nursing work in our department be widely acknowledged at UCSF, and this award will provide that recognition.”

Nurses may be nominated by any UCSF colleague, including technologists, faculty and ancillary staff, and even patients. Each month, the winner will be given a gift pack, and the winner’s photograph will be displayed on a plaque. At the end of each year, an award will be given to the “Radiology Nurse of the Year,” and there will be a special event to honor of the chosen Nurse of the Year with his or her supportive departmental colleagues.
